When you enter a matchmaking lobby in Call Of Duty: WWII Zombies you have several choices to make with the character you play. You can choose to play a specific character or pick no preference. You cannot have multiples of the same character in a match.

If someone has already picked the character you want, you can try to pick the character and they will be moved to another character but only if they have no preference set. The characters are limited at the moment, with most sources reporting just the initial characters available. There is still a chance people have yet to figure it out, but there’s also a possibility that unlocking new characters will come via DLC.
