Want to recruit more members to your party and boost your camp numbers? This Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion Location Guide will tell you how to unlock additional characters that can join your case, adding new members to your party and with them, an array of exciting new abilities and potential.
Companions serve multiple purposes in Baldur’s Gate III. Most of them will join you on your adventure. Once recruited, they function much in the same way as the main character. They have their own classes, their own progression paths, and usually their own side quest that involves getting to know them better. Other companions, such as the Dog and Hooded Skeleton, that bring perks to your camp but not much else.
A walking brain covered in spikes… Yeah, I don’t know if you want this companion either. In the second room aboard the alien vessel at the start of the game, you can hear a voice calling out to you. Inspect the nearby apparatus and it will take you up a floor to a human body. If you make the right choice, you can have the brain join you as a companion.
Shadowheart is a fantastic addition to your team. She’s a Cleric, bringing good defensive, healing and buff abilities to your team. You unlock Shadowheart as a Companion when you arrive on the Ravaged Beach after the ship crashes. Simply head North to the ruins entrance and you will encounter here there.
Astarion brings trickery and explosive burst damage as a Rogue with a dark secret. After you wash up on the Ravaged Beach follow the path to Shadowheart and then follow the path West. You will run into Astarion before long and can convince him to join your party.
After you wash up on the beach and have met Shadowheart and Astarion, head to this location on the map. You will find Lae Zel trapped in a cage by some Tieflings. Free her however you see fit, she will then join your party as a Companion.
No high fantasy party is complete without the egotistical Wizard, and Gale fits that role perfectly. Bringing a lot of versatility to the group, Gales abilities let you interact with the environment for additional damage and effects on your enemies.
I unlocked Gale here. I had completed the first events in The Hollow and then found this fast travel point here, it was my third fast travel location. Gale came out from the portal and offered to join the party.
Wyll is a powerful Warlock with a good reputation in the area.
You unlock The Blade here, in The Hollow. It’s the location of the druid healer so the story will take you here. Speak with him and he will join your party.
A mysterious undead that offers a vital service for a fair price. The Hooded Skeleton allows you to spend 200 Gold on resurrecting a dead ally, reattaching their soul to their body. This is a priceless service, so make sure you unlock the Hooded Skeleton.
Near the start of the Ravaged Beach area is the Ruins, there’s a side quest to explore it. At the very end of the ruins, in a secret room, is a Sarcophagus. Open it to reveal the Hooded Skeleton. He will then appear at your camp.
We’re unsure if Scratch serves a mechanical purpose but who doesn’t want a pet dog to greet them after a tough days adventuring?
You can find Scratch here, walking around his owners corpse. If you speak with him and let him smell you, he will follow you back to camp next time you return.

Blaine "Captain Camper" Smith is one of the original founders of Gamers Heroes. Now operating under the guise of Editor-in-Chief (purely because we felt the position was needed for public relations purposes), he's tasked with a lot of the kind of jobs that would put you to sleep at your desk.
When he's not catching some Zs, you'll likely find him arguing points he knows nothing about, playing the latest rogue-like he'll never complete, or breaking something on the website that never needed fixing.
