2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake set an incredible precedent as the first part of this fan-favorite trilogy, winning countless awards in its wake. With years of anticipation behind it, the upcoming release of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth promises to carry the torch, leading players outside the stifling confines of Midgar into a vast open world filled with near endless possibilities.

Gamers Heroes got an in-depth session with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at a recent press event, reuniting with a cast we have to know and love. For somebody who has played the original multiple times (and has an Editor-in-Chief with a Cloud profile picture), our time so far with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth feels incredibly fresh and full of possibilities, all while sharing the familiarity and camaraderie of a close friend.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Preview

Story

We were able to play through the first two chapters of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, continuing the story of party members Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, and Red XIII.

This cinematic action RPG wastes no time, picking right back up from the party’s escape from Midgar in Final Fantasy VII Remake. There is a “Story So Far” section that can get players up to speed, but those who have previously joined AVALANCHE and its cause will be better prepared for the events that follow.

However, rather than focus on the here and now, the first chapter of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks back to the events that happened in Nibelheim five years ago.

It was truly a different time – SOLDIER Cloud Strife, joined by former brother-in-arms Sephiroth, are sent to this town the former member calls home. Rounding out the trio is the plucky Tifa Lockhart (complete with cowboy hat!), serving as their guide to the first Shinra reactor that’s located at Nibelheim’s summit. A treacherous climb, these three will have to contend with monsters, downed bridges, and other threats.

One might know these story beats from the title’s 1997 debut, but the events that transpire are presented in a brand-new light. For one, the power of the PlayStation 5 is on full display – monsters and mako reactors have never looked so good, with a presentation that manages to transform the polygonal and pre-rendered 32-bit landscapes to the modern era. However, it’s the way the story unfolds that will make even the most experienced SOLDIER on the edge of their seat. We won’t spoil the surprise(s), but take note this is far from a simple remake.

The Open World

After leaving the idyllic (and aptly named) city of Kalm, players will soon be treated to a truly massive world in the form of the Grasslands.

This open-world area lives up to its size by giving players a wealth of activities to explore. No need to be lost (at least, no need if you don’t want to be) – there are plenty of quest markers that are conveniently located at the top of the map. Color-coded for easy access, players can easily see where the next major item lies as the crow flies.

However, while that is most certainly an option, that would be an absolute disservice to the sheer amount of content Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has on tap. There are plenty of things to discover as players fulfill their wanderlust, from crafting ingredients to treasure troves. As party member Barret Wallace says early on, pick any direction and walk forward!

Chocobo

Walking on foot is so four years ago, going the way of the dodo. Rather, the new bird in town is the iconic-feathered friend: the Chocobo!

After visiting Bill’s Chocobo Ranch in the Grasslands and tracking down Piko the Chocobo in an amusing minigame, these big ol’ yellow birds are at your beck and call with a single whistle – conveniently mapped to the R1 button.

Not only do they help players traverse murky swamps and add some pep to your step, they can also sniff out a bunch of goodies ripe for the taking – just the thing to boost your inventory! During our time with the preview, we loved traveling around in style, seeking out said goodies and getting used to the dynamics of our feathered friend.

Feel like a Chocobo is not quite fast enough? Final Fantasy VII Rebirth features a fast-travel system that is tied to a number of points of interest. Towns, repaired chocobo stops, and activated Remnawave Towers (more on that later) can all help players move from point A to point B with relative ease. It took us a fair amount of time to get from the outskirts of Kalm to Bill’s Chocobo Ranch, so for those looking to get a move on, this will prove to be just the thing one needs to jet set.

Community Noticeboards and Side Jobs

Providing that odd jobs aren’t just for Craigslist anymore, Cloud and co. can work hard for the money throughout Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

For those wondering what lies in store, players will be able to check out Community Noticeboards to find new employers. Those that take on these side quests can get themselves a number of perks, including rare rewards, an increased party level, and even deeper bonds with one’s allies.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Final Fantasy game without Quests! There’s also the occasional jobs that pop up throughout Final Fantasy VII Remake. Completing these hand-for-hire tasks will net players sweet, sweet Gil currency.

Chadley’s Intel

Returning to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is cyborg and materia researcher Chadley, eager to have Cloud and his friends help him with his research around World Intel after their initial encounter in the Sector 7 slums of Midgar.

Remnawave Towers

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s world is massive, but there’s a way to get a clearer picture as to what the map has in store: Remnawave Towers.

Located throughout Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s Grasslands, these towers help to show a number of points of interest once activated. Think of it as similar to the Sheikah Towers from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, providing a clearer picture of different regions of the map. This proves to be just the thing for players to uncover ruins, rare phenomena, and other points of interest that one will absolutely need to truly complete Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. As mentioned before, they also serve as a waypoint.

During our time with the game, we quickly came to realize that the Grasslands hide countless secrets. With each Remnawave towers activated by players, players will truly be able to see everything Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has to offer.

Lifesprings

As players travel far and wide, there are plenty of Lifesprings hidden away in the world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. While Shinra couldn’t care less about them, Chadley is all too eager to actively seek these areas out.

We ended up finding one of these Area of Interest in our journey – albeit with a little help from a springseeker owl. After sending the data over, we were able to get some Region Intel from the area that, in turn, provided additional worldbuilding. Chadley did mention that these lifesprings are in every region, so we look forward to truly immersing ourselves throughout our journey in the full release.

Combat Simulator 3.1.0

For those that like to test their might in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Chadley’s got just the thing: The Combat Simulator. With this virtual world, a number of Deities like the mighty Titan are ready to be summoned and subsequently taken down.

However, the devil is truly in the details. While players can net themselves some valuable prizes like summoning materia of these fearsome foes, they also default to their full power the first time one challenges them. We ultimately learned this the hard way during our session, resulting in a situation we’d rather not relive.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however; there is a way to get an edge. By analyzing summon crystals around the world, players can lower the power of the enemies of the Combat Simulator by a magnitude of three. In a nutshell: The more summon crystals you find, the easier they become. In other words, it pays to explore!

Queen’s Blood

It just wouldn’t be a Final Fantasy title without a minigame that promises to absolutely consume one’s life and rack up those play hours. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players will be able to find their heart in the cards with the release of Queen’s Blood. Getting a deck early on, players will be able to challenge people (and little girls with stuffed animals) the world over, building the perfect set of cards as things progress.

However, this is far from a simple repeat from Final Fantasy VIII’s Triple Triad.

Queen’s Blood tasks players with taking turns as they place cards down in one of three different lanes. Each card has its own point value, with the power of each card placed added to one’s lane total. However, players must keep the emerald pawns in mind, as they correspond with which cards go where. Whoever has the most points in each lane wins that corresponding pot, with the highest total points winning the game.

However, Queen’s Blood has a number of wrinkles that add some serious depth. For one, positions can rise in rank, which is a key part in commanding the board and getting the upper hand against one’s opponent. In addition, certain cards have certain abilities, meaning that carefully planning one’s loadout at the beginning of each match is an absolute must.

While we spent approximately five hours with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, truly living out our (final) fantasies in the process. Despite this, we still have so much more we want to uncover, and are eager to play more and see what lies next for Cloud Strife and his party.

Fans can experience all of these elements – and then some – when Final Fantasy VII Rebirth releases for the PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Following the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Cloud’s Strife’s story continues with the release of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Following the party’s escape from Midgar, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will feature a more open-ended environment compared to Final Fantasy VII Remake’s linear progression system.

The Active-Time Battle (ATB) system makes its return, along with action-focused melee combat. Making its appearance in Episode InterMISSION is the Synergized Mechanic, which allows for members to sync up attacks.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come out for the PlayStation 5 on February 29.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark will take the spotlight with the release of Rocksteady Games’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

As one would expect with the title, players will be tasked with taking on the infamous Justice League, which is under the control of Brainiac.

Along the way, this action shooter will have players teaming up for four-player cooperative multiplayer shenanigans. To keep things unique, each character has access to two weapon classes, along with a unique melee combat style and traversal method. A skill tree encourages growth as well, and players can re-spec at their leisure.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 2.

Persona 3 Reload

The Dark Hour awaits once more with the release of P-Studio and Atlus West’s Persona 3 Reload.

A remake of 2006’s JRPG Persona 3, this title will once again have players joining the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.) as they set out to defeat Shadows and climb Tartarus.

The development team has overhauled Persona 3 with the Reload release. Various graphical and functional updates have been made, along with new character designs and music. A number of quality of life changes have also been made to improve the overall experience.

Persona 3 Reload will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 2.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink

The Granblue Fantasy franchise will feature a new action RPG with the release of Cygames and Xseed Games’ Granblue Fantasy: Relink in February.

A grand adventure in the Sky Realm awaits in this title – with players bestowed the great honor of being the captain of a skyfaring crew. Joined by the dragon Vyrn and the young girl Lyria, players will head to the fabled Estalucia island beyond the end of the skies.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is far from a solo affair; its real-time combat supports up to four-player co-op. Each enemy and party formation has strengths and weaknesses, with Link Attacks and Chain Bursts helping out in a pinch.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 1.

Skull and Bones

After multiple delays, the world of Ubisoft Singapore’s Skull and Bones is set to release next month.
Players will be able to set out to be a pirate kingpin in this title, rising the ranks and growing your Infamy along the way. As players take on contracts, they’ll be able to take on brutal naval combat and customize the pirate ship of their dreams.

It’s not just rival factions players will need to keep an eye out for in this title; Skull and Bones also features unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, and even deadly wildlife.

Skull and Bones will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 16.

However, Enshrouded’s demo at Steam Next Fest completely ruined that approach – it was a technically impressive demo that worked flawlessly from start to finish. A game boasting several intriguing and creative design choices around an often stagnating survival genre, I could not wait to jump in to Early Access.

Needless to say, I was not disappointed.

Enshrouded Early Access is Peak Survival Gaming

In the days – and weeks – building up to Enshrouded’s Early Access release, I spent over 100 hours in LEGO Fortnite and Palworld. This is primarily the reason for waiting so long to share my thoughts on Enshrouded; I needed to wash my sins away. While I made every effort to do just that, it’s impossible not to rejoice in the areas of Enshrouded that I felt more recent releases completely lacked.

It took seconds – and I mean seconds – for Enshrouded to impress. The game looks beautiful, and some of the sights on offer demand you stop absolutely everything to take them in, even if for a brief moment. With sprawling hills, dangerous mists that cover the lands below, and forgotten towns of an old world gracing the horizon, Enshrouded’s world feels huge. Every inch screams to be explored; we’ve played approximately 20 hours between our team and don’t feel we’ve even experienced 10%.

After a brief tutorial, one wasting no time demonstrating Enshrouded’s visual feats, I set off to do what I always do in these games – and something I’ve grown to hate – :building my first base. I say first base because that’s all it ever is. Hours, days, even weeks later, eventually, you know you’re going to be spending hours tracking back and forth, miles from the valuable resources you need. This usually means I’m building four walls, a door, and maybe slapping a roof on if I’m feeling creative, but Enshrouded sucked me right in.

I set up a small porch played around with a balcony, threw on a chimney, and utilized some scaffolding to fix the roof. Everything feels so intuitive, with everything slotting together effortlessly. It’s reminiscent of the modern survival greats like Conan Exiles and ARK Survival Evolved. One is able to build a beautiful small farm house in a flowery field, a small haven in a deep woodland, or even a massive and foreboding castle on the cliffside. It’s impossible for me to ignore the uninspiring construction mechanics of Palworld and LEGO Fortnite’s frustration design choices, but even still, Enshrouded’s building mechanics share the throne with some of the best the genre has to offer.

I could tell before long that my allies were getting irritated with my constant sharing of “oh my god this works” and “thank god they did this” when building the base, so we set out to rescue some allies. While not as cruel or Pokemon-like as Palworld, Enshrouded’s early tasks involves sending players out to rescue survivors of the old world. A blacksmith, a carpenter, a farmer, professions with abilities that will greatly aid in the rebuilding of civilization, each unlocking exciting new blueprints and building opportunities once discovered. This is where my love for Enshrouded stood at a crossroads.

If there’s one area of Enshrouded I still can’t quite settle on, it’s the objective-based nature of exploration and progression. The traditional survival approach of a tutorial walking you through the basics before unleashing you on a sprawling open-world has been replaced with, quite frankly, an often overwhelming number of objectives and map markers to chase down.

You are still completely free to explore, and Enshrouded rewards exploration like few others do, but following the main story objectives is often the best route to progress and unlock more meaningful blueprints. It’s a system implemented well; I never felt confused, lost, or unsure of what to tackle next. Nevertheless, I also missed the satisfaction of searching for particular resources or locations. Braving through the elements to find that one last material to make a new sword or set of armor. One of the many notes I discovered in the game world led to a quest to locate buried treasure, usually a favorite activity in games like this, but it was simply a matter of heading to the location marked on the map and picking up the chest.

While it’s an area of the game I’m not sure if I enjoy, I’m sure many players will be more than happy experiencing something where the core experience is different from other survival titles. It’s one of the many areas Enshrouded focuses on to distinguish itself in a sea of popular survival games, but it is one of the few that I wasn’t immediately in love with.

This is a stark contrast to other areas of the game, making me mumble to myself: “Why don’t more survival games do this?” The survival mechanics, primarily the requirement of eating and drinking, isn’t simply another case of unimaginative micromanaging small bars on the user interface. You are not punished for forgoing a meal or passing up a freshly filled bottle of water, making it one of the many elements of Enshrouded just screaming to be explored.

Different food types belong to different groups, and each individual food provides various buffs and bonuses once consumed. These bonuses can be stacked across the different food groups to compliment a character’s specific build. As the frontline fighter and tank of our group, I was combining meat buffs from some finely grilled Wolf Meat with some roasted Corn, buffing both my strength and constitution. It’s a very simple approach to the core survival aspect of the game. This, in turn, makes an otherwise dull and repetitive experience far more satisfying and exciting.

That same approach is felt across the game. Small changes, tiny sometimes, but refreshing and innovative enough that even seasoned survival fans will take a brief pause. I lost count of the times we shared an “Oh, that makes a lot of sense” whenever we came across one of these small changes. One that stands out the most, at least for someone that enjoys making a house a home in these sorts of games, was the Rested system.

Being Rested provides a character with a huge buff to stamina and regeneration, both crucial when exploring the more dangerous areas of the game. Sure, like most survival games, you can throw down a bed in a run-down shack and call it a day, but adding that extra touch is rewarded. Players can increase the potency of the buffs applied by extending the duration through the increasing of the comfort level in the area surrounding the bed. Tables, chairs, rugs, items that are typically mundane and useless, instead offer to both heighten the realism and immersion of the experience, while directly rewarding players for doing so. Again, something quite simple, but so effective and, really, a lot of fun.

I feel my recent foray into Fortnite LEGO, a well executed but bare-bones title, made me truly appreciate Enshrouded. While a single and vital biome could be a 40-minute walk from your base in LEGO Fortnite, I instantly fell in love with traveling in Enshrouded. It does somewhat lessen the peril of exploration, knowing you are usually only a minute or two from quickly returning home and restocking supplies. Despite that, this is vastly overshadowed by the pure pleasure of just being able to explore and have a good time, all without the fear of only being seconds away from losing everything and spending the next hour recovering. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you can simply open the map, home in just a few seconds.

Most of these features are not unique to Enshrouded, but all of these elements together highlight the exact reasons fans truly love the genre. Put simply, it gives players the chance to focus on the fun aspects of the survival genre. Exploring, taking on challenging boss battles, finding exciting new resources that unlock new blueprints, using the fantastically designed building system to make works of art. Enshrouded is everything I love about the survival genre without all the filler.

Enshrouded’s fledgling adventure into Early Access is technically and mechanically impressive, and as feature rich as games 10 times its lifespan.

When it came to Gamers Heroes’ 2023 Game of the Year Awards, we chose titles that stuck with us well after the credits rolled. Some took us on an adventure, some put a smile on our face, but all managed to make their mark in the industry for both 2023 and the years to come.

A few things to note:

• We don’t use multiple categories here at Gamers Heroes; We don’t want to give an exclusive award for a game on multiplatform


• Or put an indie game up for GOTY that doesn’t automatically win indie GOTY, or nominate a game for an indie award that isn’t indie.
• Or announce a cut-off date and then announce nominations a week before that date.
• Or nominate someone for something they didn’t actually do.

On that note, here are Gamers Heroes’ 2023 Game of the Year winners, in no particular order…

Hogwarts Legacy

The Wizarding World has made an impact in the worlds of literature, movies, and even candy, but there previously had yet to be a game that lived up to the legacy of The Boy Who Lived.

That is, until Avalanche Studios and WB Games performed some magic with the release of Hogwarts Legacy. Fans of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series will be absolutely chuffed to see the hallowed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its surroundings in striking detail. Everything you’d expect is present and accounted for, from one’s house selection to classes to even trips to Hogsmeade.

However, it’s not all sunshine and butterbeer in this action RPG. Hogwarts Legacy features an original story set 100 years from the books, having players contend with the hostile goblin Ranrok, ancient secrets, and plenty of dangers. It’s a dream come true for all us muggles who dare to dream.

Hogwarts Legacy is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

We’ll spare you the “wonder” puns and just say that Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder is one of the best entries in the Super Mario Bros. series to date.

This is certainly no small feat – there are enough “New” entries in the series to make the concept feel old. However, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is just teeming with life, with a fresh new world in the form of the Flower Kingdom to explore.

As one would expect, a new title comes with new power-ups, and the chance to turn into an elephant or drill through the world changes things up a considerable deal. However, it’s the Wonder Flowers that put Super Mario Bros. Wonder ahead of other entries; every single level has an alternate reality that sets out to change platforming standards. From transformations to musicals, the creativity shines through until the day is saved – and then some with its robust post-game.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder once again proves that Mario is the king of the platforming genre. Much like his previous adventures did before, the amount of creativity and polish on display sets a new industry standard.Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review, Casey Scheld

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is available for the Nintendo Switch.

Baldur’s Gate 3

After a partial release came out back in 2020, the full release of Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is easily the best turn-based game of 2023.

The development team has done everything in their power to make sure Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out. Every single character in this immersive epic is voice acted and motion captured, companion characters have their own narrative, and there are even 46 suubclasses to choose from.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s flexible quest system made sure our experience was truly one of a kind. When we say all choices matter, we truly mean it; we sunk more than 90 hours across its three acts and dealt with the repercussions of our actions well after they occurred. When paired with its open world, it proves that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a masterclass of design.

We’re not alone in our accolades, either; the title has also won Game of the Year from the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards – no small feat!

Those who huddled around weekly Dungeons & Dragons sessions will love Baldur’s Gate 3; no Dungeon Master required.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is nothing short of a masterpiece. The story is incredible, the world gorgeous and immersive, voice-over and writing of the highest quality, an amazing soundtrack, everything comes together in near perfect harmony. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Six years after the seminal The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set a new gold standard, Nintendo has raised the stakes once more with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The freedom from the protagonist Link’s previous adventure is still present and accounted for; Hyrule’s got plenty of Shrines, quests, recipes, and tasks that will command your attention.

However, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom triples its world size with the inclusion of the Sky and the Depths, each containing elements like Brightroot and floating islands. There’s also Zonai devices, and new abilities like the Ultrahand and Fuse encourage creativity.

Put simply, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom once again redefines the open world genre.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

While the Star Wars franchise has seen a bit of fatigue as of late (we’re looking at you, Book of Boba Fett), Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts do Star Wars right with the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order wowed us when it originally came out, and we were absolutely thrilled to continue Jedi Cal Kestis’ journey in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This protagonist’s Padawan days are well behind him; this action-adventure title features new stances (including dual-wield stances), a new Force stasis ability, and deeper character customization.

Cal’s open world in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has also received a noticeable glow-up; players can explore optional areas, Jedi Meditation Chamber puzzles, and far more densely populated worlds. Rounding things out is an epic sci-fi story that pits players against the Galactic Empire once more.

This entry proves yet again that letting Respawn handle the Star Wars IP is the right call. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a Game of the Year contender in a very stacked year.Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Review, Johnny Hurricane

There were plenty of other releases that just barely did not make our 2023 Game of the Year Awards list. However, we did want to pay tribute to them with our “Honorable Mentions” category:

Rather, we loved how RoboCop: Rogue City got the little things down as well. From chasing down a stolen 6000 SUX to even the way RoboCop drives a police car, everything comes together to make RoboCop: Rogue City the ultimate love letter to fans of the series.

We at Gamers Heroes can never get enough co-op action in our lives. IronOak Games and Curve Games have heard our pleas, releasing their co-op thriller For the King II to quench our dying thirst.

Roguelite and tabletop gameplay come together like peanut butter and chocolate, creating a delicacy that is easy to learn but hard to master. While For the King II doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but the advancement and progress of each class is absolutely stunning. We had a fantastic time gathering elements from its world, surviving the elements, and recruiting villagers. It leads to an immersive system that’s easy to get lost in. Put simply, LEGO Fortnite features the best elements of the crafting genre.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Ryu Ga Gotoku and SEGA are keeing the long-running Like a Dragon series of games going strong with the release of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in January.

Coming back from Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga is back on the scene – albeit in Hawaii. No need to worry, though; both Kazuma Kiryu and Japan also make an appearance as well.

Gameplay features a turn-based combat system that has players choosing from a number of different “Jobs” (think classes), while Summons can be called in via the “Poundmates” system. True to series form, there’ll be plenty of things to do – expect karaoke, darts, and the Crazy Delivery food delivery system. There’s even the island management sim Happy Resort Dondoko – just the thing to shake off the winter blues.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 26, 2024.

TEKKEN 8

The King of Iron Fist Tournament returns once more with the release of Arika and Bandai Namco’s TEKKEN 8.

With a focus on aggressiveness, this one-on-one fighter will feature a “Heat” gauge system, a new juggle combo extender, stage destruction, and all new character models that utilize all the shiny perks of Unreal Engine 5.

Speaking of characters, there’ll be 32 characters as part of TEKKEN 8’s base roster. There’ll even be some new faces in the form of Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo, Jack-8, Reina, and Victor Chevalier – just the thing to spice things up.

TEKKEN 8 will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Januayr 26, 2024.

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes

Gamers Heroes has scored the Under Night series of fighting games favorably, and Type-Moon, Arc System Works, and French Bread’s Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes looks to continue the trend.

The first numbered sequel in the series, 24 total characters will make their appearance. New faces join the roster as well, with Moonlight Dancer “Twin Barrel Beauty” Kaguya, Indomitable Rampart “Steel Guardian” Tsurugi, and Endless Entity “Eternal Re-Birth” Kuon making an appearance.

This isn’t just for show; all characters boast new moves, game mechanics like Creeping Edge and Celestial Vorpal add depth, and there’s even rollback netcode for silky smooth online play.

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on January 25.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy

Capcom returns to Apollo Justice’s adventures in the courtroom with the release of the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy in January.

The complete Apollo Justice package, this trilogy features the 14 episodes of “Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney,” “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies,” and “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice,” on top of the two previously DLC-only Special Episodes.

New to these games? Players will be able to enter the courtroom as they follow the lawyer Apollo through the Dark Age of the Law. Even those that have experienced the turnabout courtroom will be able to experience new content in the form of the Orchestra Hall, Art Library, and Animation Studio.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will come out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on January 25.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Featuring art by Jean-Christophe Alessandri and rmusic by Mentrix and Gareth Coker (Ori and the Will of the Wisps), Ubisoft Montpellier return to the Prince of Persia series with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Much like previous entrieis, this 2.5D side-scrolling title lets the protagonist Sargon deftly navigate platforms. With his pair of blades, he can parry and utilize the new Sargon’s Athra’s Glow mechanic. There’s also the signature time-based powers, and players will be able to utilize different MetroidVania elements throughout its interconnected world.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on January 18.

Homeworld 3 will strive to provide an immersive cinematic experience, one that builds upon the iconic 3D RTS gameplay with cover-based tactics and physics-based ballistics simulation. Also new to Homeworld 3 is a cooperative mode that combines the series’ strategic gameplay with roguelike challenge and progression.

Homeworld 3 will come out for the PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on March 8.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square Enix returns to the world of Final Fantasy VII with the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

The successor to 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will have will continue the story of Cloud Strife after his escape from Midgar. An open-world environment away from the confines of the city awaits, with players hitching rides on Chocobos, taking part in new minigames, and truly getting immersed in its world.

For longtime fans of the original JRPG, they’ll be pleased to see the appearance of fan favorites Cait Sith and Vincent Valentine.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come out for the PlayStation 5 on February 29.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

The next mainline chapter of the Like a Dragon series awaits with the release of Ryu ga Gotoku and SEGA’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Ichiban Kasuga is joined by Kazuma Kiryu in the Isezaki Ijincho district of Yokohama and Honolulu City in Hawaii.

Turn-based combat complete with class-based “jobs” will make their appearance, with Kazuma Kiryu in particular possessing te ability to temporarily perform real-time combat.

The signature minigames of the series will also make their return, with karaoke, darts and mahjong joined by the “Crazy Delivery” food delivery game, the “Sujimon Battle” Pokemon parody, and the dating app “Miss Match.” There’s even a major mini-game in the form of “Happy Resort Dondoko Island;” just the thing for players to get lost in during these cold winter months.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 26.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Rocksteady Games, after leading the superhero genre with the Batman Arkham series, is back once again with the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024.

DC Comics fans will no doubt be familiar with Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark, and all are playable in an open world version of Metropolis.

One can fly solo or with others as they team up with Wonder Woman to free the Justice League from Brainiac’s control. If that’s not enough fan service, Kevin Conroy’s last performance can be heard in this title – an absolute must for Batman fans.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 2.

TEKKEN 8

The King of Iron Fist Tournament enters a new generation with the release of Arika and Bandai Namco’s TEKKEN 8 in 2024.

32 characters will step into the ring, including newcomers Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo, Reina, and Victor Chevalier. Of course, fan favorites like Marshall Law, Paul Phoenix, Sergei Dragunov, Kazuya Mishima, and even King II will make their apperance once more.

This isn’t a simple retread, either; TEKKEN 8 has been rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. The title will also feature new tweaks like the new “Heat” gauge system, stage destruction, and a focus on aggressiveness – just the thing to let loose.

TEKKEN 8 will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 26.

Persona 3 Reload

Originally released back in the PlayStation 2 era, P-Studio and Atlus West are returning to the Dark Hour with the release of their overhauled JRPG Persona 3 Reload.

Players will set out to defeat Shows as part of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), climbing Tartarus and forming Social Links across its world. The game sets out to combine deep RPG elements (including turn-based combat) with social simulation gameplay, making for a unique experience.

For those who played the title back then, a number of quality of life improvements have been made atop its graphical overhaul. Put simply, this is one title adventurers old and new do not want to miss.

Persona 3 Reload will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 2.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Hideaki Itsuno returns to the world of fantasy with the release of Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Featuring swords, bows, and chant magick, players can choose from a number of different vocations that let players approach combat however they choose.

Powered by RE Engine, this title will feature content that was cut from the original Dragon’s Dogma due to technology limitations. As a result, Itsuno states the title will provide a more immersive experience with accurate physics, smart character AI, and advanced graphics.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will come out for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 22.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

A game 15 years in the making, Ukranian developer GSC Game World returns to the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.

The dangers of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone await, forcing players as a lone stalker to make a number of difficult choices that will determine their fate in this post-apocalyptic world. Multiple story paths will ensure that no two playthroughs are the same.

This isn’t just for show; S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl takes advantage of this new tech with photorealistic graphics and a 64-km squared zone. There are also more than 30 different types of weapons one can use, along with different modifications – just the thing to take down its many different mutated creatures.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will come out for the Xbox Series X|S and PC in Q1 2024. The game will also be on Xbox Game Pass when it launches.

Rise of the Ronin

The latest project by Team Ninja, Rise of the Ronin will transport players to Japan during its darkest hour.

Set during the final years of the Edo period, players will wield katanas and war firearms as a custom character. A number of choices must be made during this action RPG, allowing players to pick a side and affecting the overall story.

Team Ninja said that this is their most ambitious project to date; we look forward to seeing what they have in store next year.

Rise of the Ronin will come out for the PlayStation 5 on March 22.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Rabbit and Bear Studios and 505 Games continue the legacy of Konami’s Suikoden series with its spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Directed and produced by Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will throw players into a war as they form a party to take on the Galdean Empire. This title lives up to its predecessor with an intricate story and more than 100 characters; after all, variety is the spice of life.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on April 23.

Honorable Mention – Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

While there is not much known about this DLC expansion for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring, we’re eager to dive into Shadow of the Erdtree when it hopefully launches in 2024.

RoboCop: Rogue City

Players will be able to protect and serve with an action-packed trip to Old Detroit in Teyon and Nacon’ RoboCop: Rogue City.

This action-adventure title isn’t a simple retread; players will experience an original story set between RoboCop 2 and 3 that tells of “Project Afterlife.” With their signature Auto 9 in hand (complete with unlimited ammo), players can join Anne Lewis as they dish out justice. This love-letter even has Peter Weller reprising his role as RoboCop – just the thing for longtime fans.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

After previously working with the Predator franchise, Illfonic proves that they’re not afraid of no ghosts with the release of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

Allowing teams of four to live out their ghostbusting dreams, players can track down ghosts in the ultimate game of hide-and-seek as they take on different jobs as a new recruit. Feeling a bit more sinister? Players can also choose to designate somebody as a ghost to terrorize other players in its asynchronous multiplayer. No matter what role one chooses, ghosting will make them feel good.

Hogwarts Legacy

The wizarding world awaits with the release of Avalanche Studios and WB Games’ Hogwarts Legacy.

Set before the books and movies in the 1800s, players will be able to enter the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and immerse themselves in this open world. Everything Potterheads have come to know and love can be done in this title, from choosing one’s house to making impromptu trips to Hogsmeade. For those that can’t get enough Harry Potter, this is your game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

For those eagerly awaiting the next entry in the Spider-Verse animated movie series, Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios are here to bridge the gap with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The multiple Spider-Man (Spider-Men?) are here, with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable characters with countless suits to match. Kraven the Hunter and the Venom symbiote also make an appearance in a New York City that’s just waiting to be explored. No matter what one chooses, players will really feel like Spider-Man (too easy).

Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are household names at this point, but it’s time to add a third game series to Bethesda Game Studios’ rich pedigree: Starfield.

From the moment players begin their journey across the stars, they will be able to have unparalleled freedom as they explore more than 1,000 different planets. Players can also recruit players for their crew (or even romance them if that’s their thing), customize their character to their liking, and can even commandeer spaceships.

Simply put, Starfield is Bethesda’s greatest-ever RPG. The living, breathing universe they have created is one of the most impressive in the gaming space and the sound effects and musical score push the immersion to near perfection. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Peter Parker and Miles Morales are back in action with the release of Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Players will have to contend with both Kraven the Hunter and the Venom symbiote as they explore a New York City that is filled to the brim with action. This isn’t a simple 1:1 remake of the map found in Marvel’s Spider-Man; new areas include Brooklyn and Queens, alongside new abilities and Spider-Man suits.

Final Fantasy XVI

With roots dating back to the original Nintendo Entertainment System back in the 90s, the world of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy has a timed exclusive new entry on the PlayStation 5 with the release of Final Fantasy XVI.

This adventure treads new ground with its action-based combat system, featuring summoned monsters called Eikons alongside both melee and magic attacks. The twin continents of Valisthea are yours to explore throughout its segmented open environments, along with a growing conflict that only the protagonist Clive Rosfield can solve.

Of course, for those looking for a dash of nostalgia, Chocobos, recurring enemies, and an absolutely suave version of Cid (voiced by Ralph Ineson) are all present and accounted for.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores

New characters and experiences await in Guerrilla Games’ and PlayStation Studios’ Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, an expansion of last year’s immersive game.

Players will traverse the ruins of Los Angeles, dubbed the “Burning Shores” as Aloy as they set out to pursue the awakening Metal Devil. New characters like Walter Londra and Gerrit keep things lively, while returning characters like Gildun ensure that players will come across some familiar faces.

Just note that this DLC is for veterans only; players can only enter the Burning Shores after completing the main quest, up to and including Singularity.

Forspoken

Described as a “narrative-driven adventure by the publisher, the open world of Athia awaits. Players can travel any where at any time, utilizing Frey’s magical powers in a fantasy tale that is sure to engross players. While critic feedback has been mixed on the title, those looking for something fresh will find it in this new IP.

My time with Forspoken was a strange one. Elements of the game are fantastic, with an engrossing story and a gorgeous world. However, it all just feels segmented, like nothing really wants to work together. Forspoken is a good game and one I would recommend to most open-world fans, but it just feels so close to greatness that I can’t help but walk away disappointed.Forspoken Review, Blaine Smith
